Deutscher's Free-Range Heritage Breed Christmas Turkey

from $145.00

Raised free-range in Victoria’s west, Deutscher’s Turkeys are famed for their flavoursome meat and skin that crisps to a sweet, golden hue thanks to a layer of rich fat just beneath the skin. They are a truly rare breed. While most turkeys come from hybrid lines, Deutscher’s Turkeys are some of the last heritage breeds left in the country, carrying names such as Bourbon Red, Crimson Dawn, and Sweetgrass.

They are also some of the only true free-range turkeys available in Australia! Raised with love and wide open space, they are free from hormones, non-therapeutic antibiotics or any artificial growths or supplements.

A note about sizing
Deutscher’s turkeys are free-range heritage-breed birds, so naturally, no two are exactly alike. We’ve grouped them into weight ranges rather than exact weights, allowing for the natural variation from bird to bird.

Choose the size that best suits your Christmas table and we’ll select a turkey within that range. Each size is sold at a fixed price, so there’s no final weighing, adjusting or extra payment to worry about.

Medium: 4–4.8kg

Medium Large: 4.9–5.5kg

Large: 5.6–6.6kg

Extra Large: 6.5kg+ (Very limited availability)

All Deutscher Turkeys are processed on the farm and then expertly prepared and frozen immediately, preserving all the quality, flavour and goodness of these exceptional birds - ready to be slowly thawed at home in the days before Christmas. Larger turkeys may take 2-3 days to fully defrost. Once defrosted, they are not suitable to refreeze. Being completely free-range and raised on a farm, sizes can vary and as such the weights given are approximate.

Australia’s Best Turkey

by Richard Cornish

It is considered by many to be the best turkey in the nation.

They are raised on pasture beneath the river red gums by a creek in the Grampians region by Daryl Deutscher. He is one of a handful of turkey growers in the country dedicated not only to preserving heritage breeds but also to raising them outdoors, giving them a life as close to their natural environment as possible. Exposure to the cold at night causes the birds to put on an extra layer of fat. When it comes to cooking time, this golden fat naturally bastes the birds as they roast, rendering out and coating the skin. The skin crisps to a deep golden hue while the flesh underneath remains tender and succulent.

Another advantage of Deutscher’s Turkeys is that they are slaughtered on-site in the Grampians, meaning the birds do not suffer stress from being transported hundreds of kilometres to be processed. They are then expertly prepared and frozen immediately, preserving all the quality, flavour and goodness of these exceptional birds.
